Camp Schmidt is a awesome 1 1/2 day trip for 5th graders. There is a 'Confidence Course' where you walk over tires, ropes, cords, and stumps all about 6 feet in the air. Did I fall? Yeah. I think I was the only one who did. I was trying to get across a horizontal, smooth, tree trunk. I didn't want to walk over it so I tried straddling it and I turned upside-down and fell on my back. OUCH!!!! My senses turned off when I fell then back on again, and all I could say was a high pitched Ehhhhhhhhhhh!
Before my horrid fall, I had this 'Problem Solving' thing And as a group we had to cross a 'fire pit' (it was just a 10x10 foot sandbox) There was a rope hanging in the middle and we had to get it with a stick, then swing across. Then we went to a rope fence with bells on it. It had holes shaped like this: \/\/\/\/\/. We had to get through it without ringing the bells. Once we were done with that, we went to a wooden pedestal. We tried to all be on it at the same time. That one was hard. The final one was a rock climbing wall with no footholds at the bottom. We had to all cross over it, but we couldn't.
There was orienteering where we went into a hot, empty field and we had to run to different boxes. BORING!
There was stream ecology and we got to catch water strider, whirly gig beetle, and little yellow-orange fish.
There was a nature walk and I saw two O shaped spiderwebs, perfect and beautiful. I also saw a bee pollinating a flower and I got to taste rose hips and persimmons.
(all of these activities were done over the time of both days.)
When it finally became nighttime there was chaos with flashlights, running, and yes, screaming. There is a rumor of a old man who haunts the kids at nighttime, when they are in bed. They call him Old Man Clutch. Whatever. The grown-ups were telling stories about him around the campfire. When we got into bed it was SO hot! Half of the people in my cabin refused to open the window because they were afraid of Old Man Clutch.
I think it was a awesome field trip, except for the bumps and bruises. I will post the pictures later, once I have downloaded them.

I can't wait to see the pix! It sound like you had as much fun as you could with falling on your back and all! That camp sounds way cooler than "Clear Creek" that we went to in Utah.
It can't sound any funner! And I hope you download those pictures soon! I can't wait to see them!
I have fallen like that before and it is no fun. I'm glad to hear that you picked yourself back up and didn't let it ruin the rest of your time there. I can't wait to see the pictures.
Tyra, I think you are my favorite blogger of all time (next to Janine, of course!). Thanks for posting again. We'll be up in a couple of weeks to terrorize... I mean, hang out with you. We've got to pick up our visas at the Spanish consulate in DC. Afterwards, I plan to sit on you. May sit on the other kids, as well. Maybe I'll sit on you and the other kids at the same time. So many choices, so little time. All I know is that it's going to be a smorgasborg of sitting on kids. But, back to your blogging. Thanks for the post. Neen and I miss you, love you, think you're great, and are constantly reminded of you by our precocious little Cora. Love, UncaB
